We are proud to announce our third year of providing Intro to Hockey FREE to all new members! No registration fees and free hockey equipment to use throughout the season.
Only requirment is volunteer hours, concession duties, and selling raffle and pizza/soup coupons.
The main goals of introduction to hockey should encompass the following skill sets such as balance, agility, forward & backward skating, turning, starting & stopping, and hockey safety with emphasis on fun!
If the above skills have evolved to a level of proficient habit (or solid effort), the student may progress to learning the very basics of passing, stick handling, shooting pucks, and playing hockey games.
The introduction to hockey class can be divided into two groups:
beginners (group 1) and very beginners (group 2). Group 1 skaters will be defined as students that can stand, skate, and get up off the ice without assistance. Group 2 skaters will be defined as students who will need assistance with all aspects of standing, skating, and getting up off the ice. It is advisable to break into two groups initially and as a skater’s skills and confidence advance, move the skater to group A. Usually within 8-12 weeks, the groups can be combined into one unit. Please be advised it is very helpful to have 4-6 coaches and/or helpers on the ice at all times. Group 1 Instruction The students in Group 1 should at least be able to “scoot” along the ice, stand up without assistance, and have a general understanding of skating technique. Group 1 instruction will teach the following skating skills: Balance and agility Forward skating (proper stride and technique) Backward skating Turning (sharp turns and larger circle or crossovers) Starting & Stopping Group 1 instruction will touch upon the following hockey skills: Shooting Passing Stick Handling The hockey skills should be introduced no sooner than the middle of the session or in the second half. 1-3 Practices per Week (usually Mon & Wed nights) No Tournaments No Overnight Trips
